Bees pollinate the majority of flowering plants and one of the most common economically significant species is the European honey bee (Apis mellifera). Humans have been practicing beekeeping for almost ten thousand years, and the relationship between humans and honey bees has been vital ever since.
Even though honey bees produce honey and wax, which are valuable resources on their own, thousands of hives are transported directly to crops every year for various pollination services. The use of manmade hives to transport honey bees has allowed domestication, which unfortunately opens up the possibility for pests and parasites to take over and spread easily. Understanding common arthropod maladies of honey bee hives is made easier with the BioQuipBugs teaching kit which includes 16 examples of common pests and parasites found in honey bee hives as well as a variety of honey bee species that are commonly domesticated from around the world. Specimens come either pinned or preserved in alcohol in clear, archival-quality glass vials with poly-seal caps to prevent evaporation. All specimens are sent with alcohol-proof, typed specimen data labels, and species identification tags. Pinned kits are sold in riker-style frames to protect the specimens while being handled, but still allow their easy viewing by students. Papered collections come in a vial storage unit tray for storage and organization.
