Parasite Collection
Of all living species, it is estimated that about 40 percent are parasites of some form. Many of these species are arthropods and are capable of parasitizing or transmitting a parasite to a host. Humans aren’t the only species that deals with parasites and many other animals are plagued as well including many vertebrates we are very familiar with like owls, horses, cats, cotton-tail rabbits, etc.
One of the most common insects people are familiar with transmitting disease is the mosquito. However, arthropod parasites can come in many shapes and sizes, and vary in the way they parasitize as well. Some live inside the host like tapeworms or malarial plasmodiums. Other parasites can live on the host such as lice, ticks, and keds. There are even parasites that will frequently visit the host for a meal, but not live their entire lives on them such as bed bugs, mosquitos, and fleas. Fleas and humans have quite the history given that they transmitted the bubonic plague in the mid-1300s which killed ~30% of the population of Europe.
The BioQuipBugs parasite collection helps familiarize users with common parasite species for quick identification! This kit includes 22 parasite specimens within the BioQuipBugs collection. Specimens offered within this collection have been collected over the years from a variety of vertebrate hosts, which are specifically noted within the specimen data labels. This kit serves as a great teaching resource for those who are learning about arthropod parasites or an excellent reference for personal collections/identification.
Specimens come in alcohol in clear, archival-quality glass vials with poly-seal caps to prevent evaporation. All specimens are sent with alcohol-proof, typed specimen data labels, and species identification tags.
