Papilio machaon sylvina
Rare, endemic subspecies which has not been seen in decades. These specimens are from the 1960’s.
According to Papilionidae expert Adam Cotton, he was told in 2018 by an expert that sylvina is probably extinct now, as none have been seen at all since an earthquake in 1999 which caused multiple landslides in the habitat. This extinction was due to the species being highly localized, and the earthquake caused landslides right in the habitat where the foodplant grew. Whatever the precise causes, it was seen the year before the earthquake, but not a single specimen has been seen since 1999.
